I gotta hand it to GrubGrade.com, their review of Joey D’s jerky was spot-on!  ”Joey D’s Jerky is freaking awesome,” they said. I must admit, I was skeptical about “gourmet” jerky, but Joey lives up to his name. You can truly taste the care and quality that go into his products – he’s refined the process over the years to get the optimum smoky, jerky taste and it works!  You know I love spicy foods, so I gotta say, the hot flavor was my favorite.  And I was surprised by the flavor of the teriyaki – it works!  All of the flavors –  original, tangy, hot and teriyaki – are subtle, yet work.  The quality and texture of the beef were also suprising.  We’ve all had our share of shoe-leather jerky, but Joey’s really figured it out in terms of how to get that dry, smoky flavor without, well, that dryness.   And the 1.75 ounce packages I found were great for taking along to the football or soccer game to snack on.

But Joey didn’t stop with his affinity for jerky.  He’s also created a line of salsas, again, taking great care to package only the freshest, most flavorful products.  His salsas come in three flavors – garlic cilantro, mango peach and tropical fruit.   Being a savory girl, the garlic cilantro was hands-down my favorite.   But I really found that these salsas were too good to serve with chips and crackers.   I’m thinking they’re more like sauces or accompaniments for chicken or fish.  I’m thinking the mango peach on a piece of grilled fish will be my next meal.

So you’ve got to experience it all – Joey’s jerky and his salsa’s.  My friends back in Texas – you’re getting a gift basket for the holidays!   http://www.joeydsjerky.com/

HotTaste: This jerky was cut into fairly thick strips, with most pieces fairly small and in a variety of sizes. There were pepper seeds attached to many of the pieces. The texture was very, very good, as the feel was solid yet easy to bit into, and not rubbery at all. The meat was tasty and had a mild heat at first that grew more intense as I ate more and more pieces. The small pieces were nice because they were small enough that there was no need to subdivide before grabbing a piece to eat. This was very good jerky.

Aroma: Very nice sweet and tangy jerky smell. No heat, though.

“Joey D’s Jerky is freaking awesome.”

“I don’t know how else to put it. Yes, I may be prone to using hyperbole with the frequency of a 13-year old girl at a Jonas Brothers Concert, but let me set the record straight right now and tell you that this is some of the best jerky I have ever tasted.”
